How do I become a Swimming Teacher in Australia?
Are you looking for a fulfilling and rewarding job? Do you want to teach people a lifesaving skill that lasts a lifetime? Then becoming a Swim Australia™ or AUSTSWIM™ Accredited Swimming Teacher might be the perfect career for you!
Talking from my own experience, teaching people to swim is not only personally satisfying, but it also offers a range of other benefits. As a swim teacher, you’ll have the flexibility to work full-time or part-time and can choose to progress to becoming a Deck Supervisor, Swim School Manager, or even the owner of your own swim school.
Both AUSTSWIM and Swim Australia™ qualifications are industry recognised and can be completed in as little as three months. This qualification can open up opportunities for you both in Australia and abroad. Some Swim Teachers use their skills to volunteer or work overseas, while others use their qualifications to travel and work across Australia.
As a Swim Teacher, you’ll get to work in a fun and positive environment where the focus is on health and water safety. The three specialist qualifications for Swim Teachers/Coaches are Swimming and Water Safety Teacher, Babies, and Toddlers Teacher, and Foundation Coach. These qualifications allow you to teach children from 2.5 years of age and qualify you to teach from non-swimmers through to stroke development swimmers, babies from 6 months of age through to 4-year-old swimmers, and basic swimming squad sessions aimed at developing the swimmer’s technique and introducing the swimmer to the elements of competitive swimming.
For example: To become a Swim Australia™ Swimming Teacher, you need to complete a Swim Australia Teacher Course Workshop in your local area. These workshops are presented by accredited Approved Course Presenters throughout Australia. Once you have enrolled for a Workshop, you will be sent information about the online theory component of the course, which you can begin before going to the Workshop.
After completing the online theory component, you’ll need to complete 30 hours of on-the-job training at an aquatic centre or swim school, a workbook comprising lesson plans, incident reports, and training hours registers, and conduct three lessons to at least three learners in front of a suitably accredited assessor and be marked competent. You’ll also need to provide evidence of a current CPR accreditation and a current Working with Children Check.
Once you have completed your course, you’ll receive complimentary membership and Teacher Insurance for the period of your accreditation (3 years). Holding both will enable you to gain employment throughout Australia and internationally.
